Whisper is OpenAI's open-source speech recognition model. Released in 2022, it was trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual audio and can transcribe speech in around 99 languages and translate it into English.
Because the model weights and code are public under the MIT licence, developers can run Whisper locally on their own hardware for private transcription, or build it into apps for subtitles, meeting notes, podcasts and voice interfaces.
