Gradescope

Gradescope is an AI-assisted grading platform (part of Turnitin) that helps instructors grade paper-based exams, online homework, and programming assignments faster, more consistently and with better feedback — used widely in universities, especially for STEM courses with large classes. It tackles one of higher education's biggest time sinks: grading hundreds of exams by hand, consistently and fairly.

Instructors scan or students upload work, and Gradescope groups similar answers together so you grade each unique response once and apply it to all matching submissions — dramatically speeding up grading while improving consistency. AI assists by suggesting answer groupings and, for some question types, auto-grading. It supports variable-length answers, mathematical work, diagrams, and code (with autograders for programming), plus detailed rubrics that give students clearer feedback and make grading defensible.

Gradescope is primarily institutional (licensed to schools and departments), though instructors can sometimes trial it; pricing is by institutional agreement.

Weaknesses: it's institution-focused (not for individual casual use), setup and scanning add initial effort, and AI grouping/grading still needs instructor oversight for accuracy.
